Clare Hume

Clare Hume was born in 1909 in Bloomfield, Missouri, but his family moved to Ontario in 1912 and then left their thriving veterinary practice in 1921 to farm near Saskatoon, Saskatchewan in order that the clean prairie air might soothe Clare’s father’s asthma. From the age of ten, Clare Hume showed an interest in photography, using his mother's Brownie box camera to take photos of family activities.

Hume attended Saskatoon Normal School, where he earned his teaching certificate, then taught in rural Saskatchewan until 1929, when he was hired by the Saskatoon Board of Education.

Hume attended the University of Saskatchewan, where he earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in 1940, a Bachelor of Education degree in 1943, and a Master of Education degree in 1946.

In 1948, Hume became Superintendent of the School of the Deaf, in Saskatoon, and in 1952, he was hired as an administrator for Saskatoon elementary schools. He retired in 1971.

Hume was an important longtime member of the Saskatoon Camera Club. He was married to fellow artist Clara Hume (nee Burbidge).

Clare Hume died in 2004, in Saskatoon.
