Alamgir Huque

Alamgir Huque was born in 1953 in Dhaka, Bangladesh. He studied drawing and painting at the University of Dhaka, receiving a Bachelor of Fine Arts in 1975, and later attended the University of Baroda in Gujarat, India, receiving a Master of Arts in Graphic Printmaking in 1979. Huque spent the next decade becoming active in the Bangladesh visual art scene, before moving to Canada in 1990 and settling in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan.

Huque's style has transitioned from semi-abstract toward abstracted colours. He incorporates visual symbols which, as Huque writes, “refer to ideas or experiences in the same way maps refer to specific locations....I assemble these images to highlight their natural beauty and abstracted form, shape, colour, texture and placement in the landscape. Each painting is a synthesis of the varied cultural influences that have shaped my visual consciousness. These influences converge and create ordered complexity to convey a simple message: reverence for life.”

Huque's work has been exhibited widely in Canada as well as in numerous other countries, including Australia, England, China, India, Malaysia, U.S.A., and Poland.

Huque has taught printmaking and has served as artist-in-residence at the University of Saskatchewan. From 2002 to 2004, he served on the board of CARFAC Saskatchewan.

Alamgir Huque continues his full-time studio practice in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan.
