Angela Grootelaar

Angela Grootelaar was born in 1936 in Vissingen, Holland. She lived in Thunder Bay, Ontario, upon first coming to Canada (1957-1972). She also spent some time in Alberta, teaching art in Sherwood Park, Alberta, and then came to Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, where she studied at the University of Saskatchewan. Grootelaar received her Bachelor of Fine Arts in 1990.

Grootelaar has exhibited her paintings in solo and group exhibitions since the mid 1970s. She has also painted two public murals that have been displayed in the city where she now lives, St. Albert, Alberta. Of her practice, Grootelaar says, "Once I start painting, the painting takes over."

Grootelaar's work is represented in collections including the Alberta Foundation for the Arts, Royal Alexander Hospital (Edmonton), CKCK (Regina), City of St. Albert, Alberta, and Glenrose Rehabilitation Hospital (Edmonton).

Angela Grootelaar was recently asked by the Art Gallery of St. Albert (AGSA) to contribute to a new logo design; the AGSA's “G” is modelled after Grootelaar's own signature (2011).
