Christine Loehndorf

Christine Loehndorf was born in 1941 in Allan, Saskatchewan. She studied teaching in Saskatoon at the Saskatchewan Teachers' College (1963) while pursuing an artistic education through workshops at Emma Lake, Saskatchewan. Loehndorf later studied at the University of Saskatchewan, receiving a Bachelor of Fine Arts in 1976, and then in Regina at the University of Regina, where she completed her Master of Fine Arts in 1986.

Loehndorf, who was a nun of the Order of St. Ursula in Bruno, Saskatchewan, taught art at numerous schools and colleges, as well as privately. She also served as a tutor for recent immigrants.

Working in a variety of media including watercolour, oil, acrylic, and tempera, Loehndorf's realist and expressionist paintings depicted natural scenes of trees and flowers, biblical figures, and other people. She exhibited in numerous group and solo exhibitions across Saskatchewan as well as in British Columbia. Her first solo exhibition was in Bruno, Saskatchewan, in 1975, at the Ursuline Centre.

Loehndorf also received several commissions, particularly for mural work. She painted murals for St. Thomas More College at the University of Saskatchewan (1976), and two for the Ursuline Centre in Bruno, Saskatchewan (1977, 1989). The Centre also commissioned Loehndorf to create cloth hangings (1978).

Loehndorf was the recipient of grants from the Saskatchewan Teachers' College, St. Thomas More College, and the Saskatchewan Arts Board, among others.

Christine Loehndorf moved to Calgary in the early 1990s, and died in Calgary in 1995.
