Eva Newman

Eva Newman was born in 1948 in Prague, Czechoslovakia, only a few years after her parents' three years of internment in a Nazi concentration camp during World War II. In 1949, the family moved to Canada and settled in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan.

In the 1960s, Newman took art classes with Louise Walters at Saskatoon Technical Collegiate, and attended a summer workshop at Emma Lake with Warren Peterson in 1968. Studying with Otto Rogers, Eli Bornstein, and Don McNamee at the University of Saskatchewan, Newman received a Bachelor of Arts degree in Studio Art and French in 1969. Newman's education continued through studies in France (1969-1970), Southeast Asia (1973-1974), Toronto (1974-1976), England, Spain, and France (1978-1979), as well as at the University of British Columbia in Vancouver, where she earned a Bachelor of Library Science in 1971.

Newman's diverse interests led to a variety of career moves, including work as a curatorial assistant at the Mendel Art Gallery in Saskatoon, a librarian at the National Gallery of Canada in Ottawa and at Ryerson Polytechnical Institute in Toronto, an advertising assistant at the Calgary Herald, a French instructor at Mount Royal College in Calgary, and a researcher for the Biographical Dictionary of Saskatchewan Artists, among other positions.

Newman's work has been exhibited in Saskatchewan and Alberta in solo and group shows, and is represented in private collections in Canada, the United States, England, and France, as well as corporate collections including Petro-Canada.
