Saskatchewan Artist
Icebergs & Cool Breezes - 2009 - by Anna Hergert
Anna Hergert
Anna Hergert was born in 1956 in Ruhpolding, Germany, where she developed a passion for fiber art at an early age while taking handwork classes in school. Hergert studied Early Childhood Education before receiving diplomas in Art, Design, Contemporary Embroidery, and Patchwork and Quilting from London, England’s City & Guilds institution. Drawn to fabric by what she calls its "potential for an infinite expansion of expression and form," Hergert has been a full-time professional artist since 2001.
Hergert's fabric, photography, and installation work is, in her own words, "primarily about the visual and formal - line, shape, color, texture, negative and positive space, and how these design elements communicate with each other and the onlooker." Her art has been exhibited in solo and group shows across Canada and internationally, including in the United States, Germany, and Austria. She has won numerous awards, including Awards for Excellence at the 2008 and 2011 Saskatchewan Craft Council "Dimensions" juried show, Best in Show at the 2006 "Focus on Fiber Art Association" show, and the Grand Prize at the 2011 Grand National juried quilt show in Kitchener-Waterloo.
Hergert's work is part of many private collections in Canada, the United States, Germany, and Austria, as well as the Quilt International Collection (Texas), Emmanuel Lutheran Church (Moose Jaw), and St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church (Calgary), among other public collections.
Hergert has lived in rural Saskatchewan since 2007. In addition to her own practice, she teaches, writes, and lectures on art across Canada and in the United States, often in conjunction with art guilds. She has completed two Leighton Colony Independent Residencies at the Banff Center for the Arts (2008, 2009).
Hergert has been affiliated with a variety of arts organizations, including the CARFAC Saskatchewan, Saskatchewan Weavers & Spinners, and the Saskatoon Quilters' Guild. She is a juried member of the Society of Canadian Artists and of the Saskatchewan Craft Council.
Anna Hergert lives and works from her studio near Moose Jaw, at Buffalo Pound Lake, Saskatchewan.
