Brent Hume

Brent Hume was born in the rural community of Arcola, Saskatchewan. He studied photography in Banff at the Photography Studio and in Nelson, British Columbia at David Thompson University Centre, receiving a photography certificate in 1983. Hume works as a farmer in Saskatchewan in the Carlyle area.

Hume's photographs reflect his interest in rural and farming life. Themes of family, community, and loss characterize Hume's black-and-white works that depict farmyard scenes, rural cafés, grain elevators. The photographs comment on the changing landscape of agriculture in Canada. His first major exhibition, “Neighbours,” toured in Saskatchewan, Manitoba, and Alberta (1989-1991). Since, Hume's work has been exhibited across western Canada.

Hume's solo exhibition “The Farm Auction Sale” was compiled over several years in which Hume documented farm auction sales in Saskatchewan. The show, organized by the MacKenzie Art Gallery Outreach Program (Regina), toured Saskatchewan.

Brent Hume lives and farms in near Carlyle, Saskatchewan.
